New Super Mario Bros. Movie Clip Gives Us a Look at Warp Pipes

Shot of Mario in the warp pipes

During The Game Awards on December 8th, new footage from The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released to the public. Keegan-Michael Key, who will be voicing Toad, came out and presented the clip, even engaging in the debate of mystery surrounding the cap-head situation.

The clip showed Toad guiding Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom on their way to Princess Peach’s castle. Toad, trying to clear a path, shouts to get out of the way as they need to save Luigi from dying (only to reassure Mario that that will not happen). We then see them both jumping on floating platforms, stepping on brick blocks, and, the highlight of the clip, going through the warp pipes. While Toad has no issues, Mario is all over the place before they finally arrive at Peach Castle.

Once again, the visuals look amazing, like they came out of the games. We hear a little more of Chris Pratt’s Mario, and there seems to be a hint of an Italian accent. We also get a glimpse (and questions) about how the economy in the Mushroom Kingdom works as we see Toads punching coin blocks. There was footage about Mario’s first encounter with the warp pipes shown during a Dutch TV commercial about a week ago (you can find that link in my last article), so, interestingly, we are seeing this for the first time now internationally. Otherwise, no new information about the film was released, and we probably won’t get anything else until next year. The movie is set to hit theaters on April 7th, 2023, in North America and April 28th, 2023, in Japan.
